Improving patient safety is not solely the domain of CPSI. CPSI acts as a catalyst, integrator and supporter for patient safety in Canada. Improving and sustaining health systems change requires an approach that frames patient safety within a complex system, which comes with various, often competing priorities and differences in resources, access, and needs. Patient safety is everyone’s responsibility. A coordinated systems approach among all partners is required.

The Policy Framework provides a conceptual roadmap that connects the relationships between the policy levers with measures of success. It also highlights the underlying social, economic, political and cultural context that influences conversations on patient safety and the complex roles and relationships between policy actors. It is also a guide to identify the policy gaps in Canada along with an evaluation of the following policy levers: legislation, organizational policies, standards, regulations and public engagement.
