The Holiday season is often a thought-provoking time as many of us gather with friends and family in celebration and support. This is also the first season of our newly-elected Liberal Federal Government.

I heard with great excitement about the selection of Dr. Jane Philpott as Minister of Health. Dr. Philpott brings an amazing wealth of personal and professional healthcare experience – both in Canada and abroad – to her portfolio. It appears that patient safety is a topic near and dear to her heart.

Like Dr. Philpott, CPSI stresses a belief in innovation and collaboration. Together with our partners, we have identified several priority areas of focus, including medication safety, surgical safety, home care safety, and infection prevention and control. This work is already well underway and our partners are confident that this collaborative approach will bring about real change for our healthcare system and the people who depend on it in their time of need.

The Canadian Patient Safety Institute is also on the forefront of safe care in a number of other areas, including education, governance, incident management, reporting and learning, and improving best practice on the frontline. We are a small but mighty team capable of accomplishing great things. We look forward to collaborating with our new Minister of Health and her government.

Please join me in wishing Dr. Philpott well in her new role, and accept my best wishes for a safe and healthy holiday season.
