This alert discusses the patient safety incidents which may occur when chlordiazepoxide is used in the treatment of alcohol withdrawal in patients with hepatic dysfunction or respiratory insufficiency. Seven adverse events are referenced, one of which was fatal. The alert provides recommendations to avoid adverse events in the use of chlordiazepoxide for alcohol withdrawal highlighting dosing required in hepatic dysfunction, monitoring required for patients with respiratory problems and treatment with the antidote, flumazenil.
