This alert addresses sleep deprivation in long-term care residents and the negative impact on their health. Nighttime sleep disruption is characteristic of long-term care residents and is typically accompanied by daytime sleepiness. Sleep disturbance is associated with negative health outcomes, including risk for falling, and elevated mortality risk among long-term care resident. The three top sleep disturbances identified were noise, light and the sleep environment. The alert provides several recommended actions to facilitate improved sleep quality for the long-term care resident.
