Publication Type: Action Alert
Single or Multiple Incident: Multiple
Date: 10/31/2014 12:00:00 AM

This alert discusses the potential patient safety incidents that can occur during magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) procedures. The alert identifies that procedures such as the use of an MRI can promote a feeling of complacency given its common use but that staff involved must remain vigilant of the inherent dangers. Three events have been reported to the Commission which all involved inadvertent use of non-MRI safe equipment in the MRI suite. Fortunately none of the incidents resulted in patient harm or damage to the MRI. Recommendations for the safe use of an MRI are provided in the alert.
