Use Team Strategies and Tools to Enhance Performance and Patient Safety

The Canadian healthcare system is a complex environment that is continuously changing and adapting to accommodate the daily pressures and demands that it must respond to. Leaders and providers invest efforts to ensure every Canadian has access to safe healthcare across their continuum of life, yet we know that one in three people receiving care in a Canadian hospital is inadvertently harmed.  We also know that seventy percent of all preventable harm events experienced by patients is linked to a breakdown in communication.

TeamSTEPPS is an acronym for Team Strategies and Tools to Enhance Performance and Patient Safety. TeamSTEPPS is an evidenced based teamwork system program developed jointly by the Department of Defense (DoD) and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) to improve institutional collaboration and communication relating to patient safety. The Canadian Patient Safety Institute (CPSI) was designated as the national coordinating body for TeamSTEPPS CanadaTM.  In collaboration with partners, including the Health Quality Council of Alberta, TeamSTEPPS CanadaTM has been adopted and adapted by the Canadian Patient Safety Institute (CPSI) and made available to the Canadian healthcare field.

Tools and concepts learned in the TeamSTEPPS CanadaTM program are applicable to all healthcare leaders, administrators, providers and patients and families in any healthcare setting.
