People with mental illness face unique patient safety issues when receiving healthcare. Unfortunately, there is still a lack of awareness about these unique issues among healthcare providers at all levels, as well as a lack of evidence related to these issues.

Mental healthcare patient safety issues include:

  • Suicide and self-harm
  • Violence and aggressive behaviour
  • Restraint use and seclusion
  • Absconding

All of these directly impact the safe delivery of care. That’s why it’s important to understand the factors, which may originate in the system or in the interaction between the person and the system, that lead to these types of events.
