On June 14, 2008, the Canadian Anesthesiologists' Society held a Patient Safety Symposium in conjunction with its Annual General Meeting in Halifax, Nova Scotia
The Symposium discussed simulation improving patient safety
To highlight and support the efforts of CAS in advancing patient safety in anesthesia, the Canadian Patient Safety Institute (CPSI) is providing the entire Symposium on the web. Following are summaries of the symposium proceedings and clickable links to view and hear the Introduction and presentations that followed.
Symposium Chair: Dr Pamela Morgan, University of Toronto, Toronto, ON
Presentation 1: Anesthetists' Non-Technical Skills and Patient Safety
Presented by: Dr Rhona Flin, University of Aberdeen, Aberdeen, United Kingdom
Objectives:
- Recognize how failures in anesthetists' non-technical skills (NTS) can compromise patient safety; and
- Evaluate the ANTS method for training and rating NTS in the simulator

Presentation 2: Simulation and Anesthesia
Presented by: Dr Jordan Tarshis, Sunnybrook & Women's College Health Sciences Centre, Toronto, ON
Objectives:
- Summarize the results of a national simulation survey performed by the CPSI;
- Identify key elements of team training most relevant to modern anesthesia practice; and
- Propose methods of integrating simulation into anesthesia education in Canada.
