The Effective Governance for Quality and Patient Safety program will be offered as a pre-Conference workshop, on Sunday, November 3, 2013, in conjunction with the Ontario Hospital Association’s HealthAchieve event  in Toronto, Ontario. The Governance Centre of Excellence (GCE) has partnered with the Canadian Patient Safety Institute to offer the revitalized Effective Governance for Quality and Patient Safety educational session. The curriculum has been refreshed and new elements have been added to the agenda, including real and compelling examples and case studies.

“The program provides the tools for board members and leaders to navigate through the quality and patient safety journey,” says Bob Houlden, Director of Educational Services, Governance Centre of Excellence. “We are pleased to partner with the Canadian Patient Safety Institute in providing the ongoing support and resources that board members need to effectively fulfill their obligations.”

The program provides evidence-informed approaches to governance and leadership, and innovative health governance practices, resources and tools. The program is designed for board members of healthcare organizations and the leadership team they work with - CEOs, quality and patient safety executive leads and clinical leadership. The content presented throughout is valuable for all levels.

The foundational governance practices presented in the program through the driver framework will be most appropriate for new board members and a refresher for experienced board members.

Program participants will:

  • Understand a board’s core functions related to quality and patient safety
  • Identify approaches to measuring the quality of care
  • Recognize how a culture of quality and patient safety within an organization can be led, supported and sustained by the board
  • Identify tools, structures, processes and priorities that will assist participants in improving their organizations’ governance practices related to quality and patient safety
