Selection Process

The call for submissions is open to all individual PSEP – Canada trainers, training teams and the organizations they represent.  Submissions will be reviewed by a selection panel of well-respected quality and patient safety healthcare professionals and educators from across Canada – the panel may include PSEP – Canada Master Facilitators, representatives from Patients for Patient Safety Canada, faculty members of PSEP (US) or faculty members from other CPSI education programs.

The winners will be announced on the CPSI's website and will receive one complimentary registration for an individual from their organization to attend a PSEP – Canada's Become a Patient Safety Trainer education conference.  In addition, the winners will be profiled in an article featured on CPSI's Patient Safety Crosswalk, as well as in our digital e-magazine.  Award recipients will also be invited to present on their work and its impact at a webinar organized by CPSI.

All submissions will be compiled into the "Patient Safety Education: Exemplar Practice Collective" to highlight all the great education work being done around the country to make healthcare safer.  The Patient Safety Education: Exemplar Practice Collective will be made available for download on the CPSI website.

Evaluation Criteria

The winners for each category will be selected on the basis of how the specific education initiative, along with the use of the PSEP – Canada program, enhanced patient safety education in the organization and yielded leading practices that can be applied to other healthcare organizations across the country.

The review panel will make their final selections based on the following evaluation criteria: Relevance, Applicability, Innovation, Success and Outcomes.  Final selection will be based on responses provided to the following questions:

Relevance:

  • What is your education initiative?
  • Does the initiative highlight the power of one, the power of an organization or the power of a system?
  • What were the goals and objectives for the initiative?
  • How did the initiative align with the organization's Patient Safety Plan and Strategic Plan?

Applicability:

  • How is your education initiative scalable, repeatable and sustainable?
  • Does your education initiative have applicability to other teams/units/departments or organizations?
  • Are there any challenges in applying this initiative to other teams/units/departments or organizations?

Innovation:

  • Does your education initiative employ an innovative approach to an important patient safety issue?
  • Does your initiative improve on, or replace previously available education practices in your organization?

Success:

  • Who or what were the enablers that have been vital to the successful implementation of your education initiative?
  • What has been key to its success?
  • Who or what was impacted by the success?

Outcomes:

  • What were the indicators used to measure outcomes of the education initiative?
  • What are the demonstrated outcomes of the initiative?
  • What was the reaction from patients, families, community and staff to the initiative?

Submissions must include information on all five sections listed and should not exceed 400 words per section for a maximum total of 2000 words.

Eligibility

English and French entries will be accepted between February 1st and June 15, 2016 and must meet the following criteria:

  • The education initiative must make use of the PSEP – Canada program in a prominent way.
  • The education initiative must be led or involve a PSEP – Canada Trainer or Master Facilitator.

Parameters

  1. All applications will be submitted online using the official form by June 15, 2016.  The content submitted must be original and must have all necessary permissions to submit. 
  2. Accepted applications may be asked to supply additional supporting materials.  All applications are subject to verification by the Review Panel.  Award notifications will be made in September 2016.
  3. Applicants may submit more than one application for initiatives.
  4. By submitting the application, applicants acknowledge that the CPSI will highlight and profile the initiatives on the Canadian Patient Safety Institute's websites and social media forums, and additional resources such as photographs, logos, images or video and interviews may be requested.
  5. Award recipients will receive a plaque and are invited to present their work and its impact at a webinar organized by CPSI in November/December; the exact date and time will be determined based on the award recipients' availability.
  6. Previous winners of the PSEP – Canada Innovations in Patient Safety Education Award are eligible to win the award again in a different calendar year.

  • Submission deadline:  June 15th, 2017
  • Winner notifications:  September 2017
  • Winner Announcement:  September / October 2017
  • Webinar with award recipients:  November / December 2017​ (exact date to be determined)
