Patient Safety Improvement Lead
An accomplished senior leader in the public sector, Jan Byrd is passionate about reducing harm, and engaging patients, family members and caregivers in creating safer health care systems.
Jan Byrd was an early adopter and champion of the patient safety movement in Canada, having worked from 2005-2007 at the Manitoba Institute for Patient Safety (MIPS), and then for several years at St. Boniface Hospital as the Manager of Patient Safety, Quality and Patient Relations. Jan is currently a Patient Safety Improvement Lead at the Canadian Patient Safety Institute (CPSI), where she supports the national Consortium and its Integrated Patient Safety Action Plan, leads the Surgical Care Safety portfolio, and focusses on strategic partnership development, related to policy support and Western Canada relations.
Prior to moving to CPSI, Jan was the Executive Director, Wellness and Student Services at the University of Winnipeg, which included leadership of a nationally recognized, sexual violence prevention and response strategy.
Jan has held two successive Ministerial appointments to the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority (WRHA) Board of Directors, where she is sits as a Director, and as Chair of its Quality, Patient Safety and Innovation Committee.
Jan holds of Master's degree, focused in the Sociology of Health, Illness and Medicine, from the University of Manitoba; she also has a Lean Certification. She is an active mother of two and is very involved in the music community; notably, she is an accomplished classical soprano and member of The Winnipeg Singers, a professional choral ensemble.
