Patient Safety Education comes to frontline healthcare professionals in Canada!

(en anglais seulement)

Patient Safety Education Project Canada (PSEP - Canada)

The Canadian Patient Safety Institute is embarking on an exciting partnership with Northwestern University, Chicago, USA to adapt a patient safety curriculum for practicing, frontline healthcare professionals in Canada. The PSEP program  is built on a Master Facilitator, train the training team model which provides a peer to peer framework to guide patient safety education for all healthcare professionals.

Teams who attend the PSEP-Canada program will have the opportunity to practice improving patient safety skills and actively plan next steps for patient safety education in their home organization. PSEP-Canada is built with an interprofessional approach. Participating teams will be comprised of at least three members, including a physician, a nurse, as well as another clinical professional and a senior executive from the organization.

The modules within the PSEP-Canada Program are being tailored for the Canadian context and integrate current approaches at the Canadian Patient Safety Institute.  These modules include content on applying human factors in the workplace, scientific methods for improving safety, organizational culture and dealing with change, understanding teamwork, moving beyond blame to systems thinking and how to teach and implement patient safety.

Despite the recent gains in healthcare professional knowledge of patient safety issues, large numbers of healthcare teams have not had access to training in the basics of safety knowledge and competencies. Watch the CPSI website for details on upcoming conferences and details on how to enrol your multidisciplinary team to this very timely and valuable education program. We plan to provide a “Become a Patient Safety Trainer” conference this November 2010 and in February 2011 and will post details on the conferences soon.

We are currently announcing a call for applicants to join our pan-Canadian, interprofessional team of Master Facilitators. Our Master Facilitator Network will be comprised of professionals who are passionate about patient safety work, and have the proven skills and ability to inspire change. As a Master Facilitator for PSEP-Canada you would join a dynamic team in bringing this frontline patient safety program to your healthcare colleagues across the country.
