Bringing the Water to the Horse: Drinking Deeply the Patient Safety Message
Bridgepoint Health, located in Toronto (ON) used a fun and engaging approach to celebrate Canadian Patient Safety Week in 2009. Three hospital educators presented a ten-minute skit that dramatized in a humorous and “over-the-top” way, a number of topics including medication safety, falls prevention, sharps management, hand hygiene and personal protective equipment use. Also highlighted were support for patient self-management, professional communications, respect for confidentiality, and standards of staff attire. Over the course of the week, 11 sessions were provided, capturing between 200 to 300 people in the hallways of the hospital, including nurses, continuing care providers, physicians, housekeepers, patients and visitors.
Pulse of Quality: Creating a Culture of Patient Safety
Patient safety and quality has become the number one priority at Windsor Regional Hospital (WRH). Key aspects for organizational improvements at this community-based hospital include creating awareness, communication, timely access to data, and tapping into programs that impact every aspect of the patient’s hospital experience. Weekly Huddle meetings are attended by Clinical and Support Service Directors, where they take 10 to 15 minutes to discuss key indicators and report on Action Plans. A monthly Quality of Care report is distributed to hospital leadership and the Board of Directors. Their results are also posted on the WRH website, providing full disclosure to the public.
