Dr Bouali graduated in medicine at the University of Algiers in March 1987. He obtained the Swiss Federal Diploma in 1995, graduated in internal medicine at the University of Lausanne in 1996 and in critical care in 1997. In 2000, he completed two years of clinical fellowship in critical care at the University of Toronto. He was appointed as chief intensivist of the Centre Hospitalier de l'Université de Montréal (CHUM) in July 2000, and promoted as co-chair of the internal medicine department and program director of critical care of the University of Montreal in 2003.
Dr. Bouali is the LHIN Leader for Critical Care for the Champlain Region and an intensivist at The Ottawa Hospital. He is a member of many scientific committees and pedagogic committees across Canada. He was, as well, involved in the reorganization of the Quebec Burn Center and its promotion at provincial and national levels, and is the chairman of the organization committee of the World Congress of Burn Injuries Meeting in 2008.
Quality, patient safety and system management are his key areas of interest. Currently the Ontario provincial lead in an initiative to increase quality of patient care, efficient flow of patients through the hospital system and end of life strategies. He is one of the co-founders of the Canadian Collaborative Group for Safety and Quality Improvement, and is a leader in the Quebec and Canadian Continuous Quality Improvement branches. He has also sat on the grant review panel for the Canadian Patient Safety Institute for the past several years. Since 2000, Dr Bouali has encouraged and developed the electronic patient file through a database application.
He has published and presented numerous abstracts and posters in various national meetings over the last 4 years and is a co-author of numerous synopses, articles and textbooks.
