Catherine Gaulton is Vice-President Performance Excellence & General Counsel for the Capital District Health Authority in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The Capital District Health Authority is the largest, integrated academic health district in Atlantic Canada serving 395,000 residents. As Vice-President Performance Excellence & General Counsel, Ms. Gaulton is a member of the Senior Executive reporting to the President & CEO and the Board of Directors with responsibility for the leadership of the Performance Excellence, Infection Control and Legal Services portfolios. Ms. Gaulton has previously acted as a Senior Solicitor with Nova Scotia Department of Justice focusing on the Department of Health; as General Counsel, Worker’s Compensation Board of Nova Scotia and as Executive Director, British Columbia Health Care Risk Management Society. Prior to entering the legal field, Ms. Gaulton was a registered nurse in Newfoundland and Nova Scotia. She is a member of the Board of Directors of the Nova Scotia Health Organizations Protective Association. Ms. Gaulton received her Bachelor of Law and Masters of Law degrees from Dalhousie University. Her Masters work focused on patient safety, quality and apology as aspects of adverse event disclosure in Canadian healthcare. Ms. Gaulton is a lecturer in health law for the Faculties of Dentistry, Medicine, Law and Health Professions at Dalhousie University. Ms. Gaulton is also a frequent lecturer and writer on topics of health law, policy and patient safety for such organizations and events as Dalhousie University, the 2010 Canadian Agency for Drugs and Technologies in Health Symposium, the 2009 National Healthcare Leadership Conference, the Canadian College of Health Services Executives, the Canadian Bar Association Health Law Section, and the Nova Scotia Medical Legal Society.
